In honor of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, here are some interesting facts about him:
• Kūhiō was often called Ke Ali‘i Maka‘āinana (Prince of the People) and is well known for his efforts to
preserve and strengthen the Hawaiian people.
• While attending school in San Mateo, Kūhiō and his brothers would travel south to the Pacific seashore at Santa Cruz, California. The brothers demonstrated the Hawaiian sport of board surfing to the locals, becoming the first California surfers in 1885.
• September 1, 1902, Kūhiō decided to join the Republican Party, was nominated as their candidate for Congress, and dramatically altered the political landscape. Kūhiō was an elected delegate to the U.S. Congress as a Republican.
• He served from March 4, 1903 until his death, winning a total of ten elections.
• During this time, he instituted local government at the county level, creating the county system still used today in Hawaiʻi.
• An heir of Kaumualii and hanai by King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani.
• Prince Kūhiō was also known for writing the Hawaiian Homes Act to which he quoted, "Hawaiians want and need housing where they can make a living."
• In this act, it was promised an estimated 203,000 acres of land to restore land and dignity to Native Hawaiians.
